Scheme Closure

Tier 1 (General) is now closed with effect from 5th April, 2015. You can no longer apply or extend Tier 1 (General) Visa.

Dependants can still apply to join applicants who have obtained prior entry clearance for Tier 1 (General).

Applications for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)

Under current rules, applications for indefinite leave to remain will not be accepted in the Tier 1 (General) category from 6th April 2018.

Applicants who are currently in the UK and who wish to apply for indefinite leave to remain must submit an application on or before 5th April 2018.

Applicants are able to meet the English language and other requirements.

Requirements for ILR

You must have spent a continuous period of five years lawfully in the UK, of which the most recent period must have been spent with permission to stay as a Tier 1 (General) migrant. The rest of this period may be made up of permission to stay as:

  • a Tier 1 (General) migrant
  • a Tier 2 (General) migrant
  • a Tier 2 (Intra-Company Transfer) migrant granted under the rules in place before 6th April 2010
  • a Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP) participant; or
  • a Work Permit Holder
